INDIO – Like last year, most of the weekend’s arrests were drug- and alcohol- related.
A total of 93 arrests were made during the first of two Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival weekends in Indio, up from 80 arrests during the event’s first weekend last year, police reported Tuesday.
Like last year, most of the weekend’s arrests were drug- and alcohol- related, including 49 arrests for misdemeanor drug possession, seven for felony drug possession and 33 arrests for drunk in public or other alcohol crimes, Indio police Sgt. Daniel Marshall said.
Two people were arrested for domestic violence and one for resisting or obstructing police.
This year’s event also saw heavier than usual traffic around the Empire Polo Club because more campers than usual arrived early, police said.
One concertgoer was killed after being hit by a train while walking on the tracks in Indio.
The Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival attracts more than 90,000 people for each of the two weekends. The festival’s second installment is next weekend — with the same lineup — followed by the Stagecoach country music festival April 24-26.
