EL CENTRO -On Sunday, January 27th, around 1:40 AM, officers took a report of an armed robbery that had happened roughly thirty minutes earlier, near 8th Street and Adams Avenue. The victim, a 46 year old male from Central California reported he was robbed of his cellular phone and cash while entering his vehicle in the parking lot of a convenience store.
The suspect was described as a Hispanic male in his 30’s riding a yellow bicycle. The victim said he felt the suspect put a gun to the back of his head during the robbery.
Patrol officers began searching the area and quickly spotted a possible suspect riding along 8th Street on a yellow bicycle. Upon closer viewing the of bicyclist, officers determined he was dressed exactly as described by the victim. The bicyclist was detained and he was found in possession of the victim’s cellular phone, and the victim positively identified the suspect as the robber.
The suspect, 39 year old Frank Lopez, of El Centro was taken into custody and was booked into the Imperial County Jail on a charge of armed robbery. His bail was set at $100,000.00.
“Although a firearm was not found in Lopez’s possession, his actions constituted armed robbery, the victim remained calm, complied with the suspect’s demands and he was able to remember significant details which lead to the capture of the suspect”, said Commander Jeff Mason.
