CALIPATRIA – A woman suspected of smuggling heroin into Calipatria State Prison was arrested over the weekend.

Prison officials say 25-year-old Stephanie Nicole Martinez was approved to visit Jason Avila, who is in prison for robbery.

During the visit officers noticed the two acting suspiciously and separated them. During a search officers say they found four bindles on Avila. All bindles tested positive for heroin.

Martinez was arrested and booked into Imperial County Jail and is facing three to five years in prison if convicted of the felony charges.

Avila was placed into the prison’s Administration Segregation Unit which is a jail within the prison.

Officers say the drugs could have potentially sold for more than $19,000 inside the prison.
