BRAWLEY – Robert Brodell carried the Brawley Little League Juniors All Star team to a 8-4 victory over Oceanside National Sunday at Rancho Penasquitos with a strong game at the plate and on the hill.
Casey Kline racked up two RBI’s on a double to left field in the bottom of the fifth. Kline also had a big play when he stole home with the ball in the pitcher’s hand on the mound.
Brodell baffled Oceanside National, striking out six batters. Brodell allowed two earned runs, six hits and one walk over 6 2/3 innings.
The game was back-and-forth heading into the fifth, with eight lead changes.
The Brawley Little League Juniors All Star team finally managed to grab the lead after a strong fifth inning. Brawley went up for good on a two-run double by Brodell, scoring Dylan Reina and AJ Torres.
Brawley Juniors jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the third. Brawley got things going when Alex Hernandez singled. A groundout by Brandon Gammill then moved Hernandez from first to third. Casey Kline singled, plating Hernandez.
Oceanside National matched its two-run fourth inning with two more in the fifth. In the fourth, Oceanside National scored on a two-run triple.
The Brawley Juniors survived Oceanside National’s surge and put up two runs of its own in the fourth. Brawley scored on an RBI by George Mickel and an RBI double by Jacob Sapp.
The Brawley Juniors All Stars went up for good in the fifth scoring four total runs, which came home on an RBI double by Reina.
Assistant Coach, Austin Gastelo, spoke after the game giving some insight into the plan for Tuesday’s Sub-Division Championship game. He plan includes “Don’t give up home runs. Stay up at all times, never put their head down, and hit every inning. We need runners on to score.” This is Coach Gastelo’s second straight time making it to the Sub-Division Championship game.
The Brawley Little League Junior All Star Team is scheduled to play in the Sub-Division Championship game on Tuesday at 6:30pm in Rancho Penasquitos.
