PINE VALLEY, Calif. — U.S. Border Patrol agents at the Interstate 8 checkpoint arrested a man and woman last night for alien smuggling.

At approximately 9:15 p.m., a 57-year-old male U.S. citizen arrived at the I-8 checkpoint with a female passenger in his 1995 Toyota Avalon.  The vehicle was referred for a secondary inspection.  Once in secondary, the man gave agents permission to search his car but stated that the trunk latch was broken and he could not open it.

Agents questioned the man further about the contents of the trunk and the man admitted that there was a person inside the trunk.  Agents opened the trunk and found a 25-year-old Mexican national man inside.

The driver and his passenger were transported to a nearby station for further processing.  At this time, the couple also revealed that they were transporting the victim while driving under the influence.  They were arrested and face Federal charges for alien smuggling.  The car was seized by the U.S. Border Patrol.

This is the second time this week that agents have rescued individuals concealed inside a vehicle trunk at the I-8 checkpoint.
