CALEXICO – As the new school year begins, teachers ask students to arrive prepared with the necessary school supplies. What happens when they can not afford them? Teachers often have no option but to provide these students with the necessities themselves, with tight school budgets teachers often purchase school supplies out of their own pockets.
Recently, teachers have received help from Advance America, who have donated school supplies in generous amounts throughout U.S classrooms.
This year three Imperial County classrooms received pencils, pens, construction paper, glue, rulers, crayons, erasers, markers, backpacks, and supply boxes. The three chosen came from Kennedy Gardens Elementary School in Calexico, Ballington Academy Public Charter School in El Centro, and United Families in Brawley.
“Today I am feeling blessed. Starting off this school year with all of these donations….I’m simply speechless,” said Mrs. Aguilar, 3rd grade teacher at Kennedy Gardens in Calexico whose school was one of the fortunate to receive the supplies.
“It’s a wonderful feeling being able to help out our community,” said Ivone Corral, Branch Manager, Calexico. “This is the second year Advance America has donated school supplies throughout the U.S.,” she added.
On the first week of school each branch raffled the names of all surrounding schools and chose one. They then raffled the names of all teachers at that school and came up with a winner.
In addition to Advance America’s donations, customers also donated supplies and in some cases money to purchase additional school supplies.
“How exciting, we’ve never had anyone donate to our school,” said Gabriela Flores, Principal, Kennedy Gardens.
