en die earlier than women in America. This is not new news, we have known that for a long time. Why do you think that is? Part of it is the sin of pride. Men don’t want anyone telling them what to do! Remember the Garden of Eden…Stay away from the forbidden fruit! Men think they are strong, but many are wimps. For instance, when was the last time you went to the doctor? If it has been a while, it is because you are scared! YOU CAN’T HANDLE THE TRUTH! Or, you just don’t want anyone telling you what to do. Again the sin or pride.
Even when men were boys, they are prone to more high risk behaviors. A good read on boys-to-men health is Dr. Dobson’s classic, Bringing Up Boys. I read it and I laughed because it explained many of my risky, unhealthy behaviors growing up (and as an adult!). The male brain is different and it seeks stimulation. One example from the book is how boys often will jump off of roofs to the ground, but ask any female and they will look at your like you’re crazy. Crazy thinking doesn’t come up in the female cranium, like it does with guys.
Our health is often a mess because we drink, smoke and work too hard. That is one of the reasons men are lacking in church on Sunday mornings. They need to recover from too much stuff and so Sunday is their day of rest. Unfortunately, Jesus tells us in Matthew 11:28 “Come to Me, all who are weary and heavy-laden, and I will give you rest.â€
Not only are men less physically healthy, we aren’t as spiritually healthy, either. There are consequences to our behavior, some temporal, and also the eternal. If you have no spiritual health, i.e. you are not saved; your eternal health will be an ICU experience without the pain killing medicine. You will be in the burn unit… you will go to hell to be blunt!
I have been writing a little less lately and one reason is I am focusing on my health, since it has taken a downturn in the past year. According to my internist, I am in good shape, but I have issues according to my neurologist. So what’s a man to do if he has health issues? Brother James says to “seek wisdom†and King David stated “fools despise wisdom and instruction.†Well, when it comes to my health, I want instruction and guidance.
Again, too many men are foolish and don’t want to hear what the doctor says and will not follow his directions when they are given. My father was like that and died prematurely from cancer. My mom finally quit smoking in her 70’s when she ended up in the hospital with pneumonia. Mom outlived Dad by several years but the real issue was pride.
Since I got my diagnosis from my neurologist, Jimbo be changing! There are foods that are good for the mind, and I have been eating more of them. I still don’t pray enough, but when the Word says the prayers of a righteous man avails much, well, I be prayin’!!! I exercise, do reflexology, and I have been to the acupuncturist. Thank God I have good health insurance! Next month I will be pursuing a cutting edge health technology in Rancho Bernardo that has seen amazing results with autism, PTSD, brain trauma and others. I am excited, not so for a cure, but trying something different. And if it works, than I can share the good news, just like the Good News of Jesus Christ, who not only can heal your body now, but can heal your soul forever. I think heaven will be like a health spa, but we will all have better bodies.
If you have health issues, grow up and get to the doctor. If you have been there and done that, and you want better health, which is your only wealth, well, just call on the Great Physician. The Doctor is in all you have to do for an appointment is send Him a knee mail!Â
