Easter Sunday automobile accident fatality

IMPERIAL – California Highway Patrol logs reported a fatal accident that occurred Easter Sunday at the intersection of Keystone Road and Highway 86.

According to reports, Ulises Cortez Jr, 19, of Imperial, was driving a 2013 Nissan Sentra north on Highway 86 Easter Sunday around 4:00 p.m. at 65 mph when he approached the intersection at Keystone Road.

A 47-year-old Holtville male was traveling driving a 1988 Mazda 323 west on Keystone at an unknown speed and also approached the intersection at Highway 86.

According to initial CHP investigations, Cortez Jr. allegedly failed to stop at the red traffic signal light and entered the intersection directly into the path of the Holtville driver. The report read that the front of Cortez’ car struck the left side of the Mazda within the intersection.

After the collision, the Nissan came to rest on its wheels on the east dirt shoulder of Highway 86 north of the intersection and the Mazda came to rest on its wheels blocking both lanes of the highway southbound just north of the intersection, according to the report.

The unnamed driver of the Mazda died from injuries at the scene. Cortez Jr. was unharmed.

Investigating CHP Officer Gastelum said the accident is still under investigation.
