BRAWLEY â€“ The Institute for Socio-Economic Justice, Inc. announced its 8th Annual Cesar Chavez Community Celebration on April 20, 2013 at the Brawley cattle Call Arena.
The event will start off with a 5k/2 mile run and fun walk to benefit the Anthon Garcia (AG) Foundation to raise funds for college students at 8:00 am.
The free Celebration continues with family entertainment including Zumba dancing, Folklorico dancing, local bands, and a Show & Shine car show. Other entertainment will include a concert in the arena featuring Rocky Padilla, The Midnighters, and Sly Slick and Wicked starting 6:30 pm.
As a part of the Chavez Celebration the Institute annually recognizes an individual in the community that exemplifies the values of Cesar Chavezâ€™s service to others.
This yearâ€™s recipient of the Si Se Puede Community Service Award is Joe Montenegro.
â€œJoe has opened doors and used his knowledge and experience to support and help many organizations and individuals in our community through his belief in serving others as Cesar Chavez valued,â€ Said Eric Reyes, Executive Director of the Institute for Socio-Economic Justice, Inc. â€œWe value his commitment to giving access to others and being a community resource that is inclusive of everyone in the community.â€
Montenegro is the District Operations Manager for the Southern California Gas Company, hold various positions since 1973. He is a board member of the Sun Community Federal Credit Union, a member of the Kiwanis Club of El Centro, and a volunteer for the Court Appointed Special Advocates of Imperial County, the child Abuse Prevention Council of Imperial County and MANA de Imperial Valley, among other organizations. Montenegro was a board member of the El Centro Regional Medical Center for 10 years, including serving as President, served on the Board of the 5th District Agricultural Association, and California Mid-Winter Fair and Fiesta since 2000, having been appointed by three different governors.
Montenegro resides in El Centro with his wife Hon. Ruth Montenegro and daughter Miranda.
