EL CENTRO – Reliance Public Relations has launched a new quarterly magazine that focuses on the people and attractions of the Imperial Valley and the surrounding region.

The first print edition of Imperial Valley Alive! is currently being distributed. The e-edition can be read at www.imperialvalleyalive.com.

“This is the culmination of an idea that Sue Giller and I had been kicking around for more than a decade,” said Bill Gay, president of the El Centro-based public relations firm.

The conversations started in the middle of the recession when the Valley was being subjected to intense national coverage as “the capital of the Great Recession.”

“Most of that media coverage painted a picture so bleak we didn’t recognize this place or its people,” said Gay.  “This region needed a vehicle to tell its story to facilitate economic development, job growth and attract tourism. Our goal in this project is to create a platform to help the region thrive.“

“Imperial Valley was ripe for a regional magazine,” Giller said, “a magazine for visitors, newcomers and the rest of us interested in the diverse, vibrant, creative, energetic, innovative community that we know and love,” said Giller.

Everything fell into place this year when Reliance Public Relations and Giller’s former firm merged and former newspaper and magazine editor Peggy Dale joined the team.

“This magazine is designed to be a fun and informative tool for our Valley.  It is a vehicle where we can educate our residents and visitors about the unique and spectacular qualities of our area,” Dale said.

Dale, who coordinated production, added, “We are particularly pleased that our magazine is the product of local professional graphic, photographic and writing talent,” Dale said.

The content of the magazine has been driven, in part, by the Facebook page the magazine established during the summer. “When we took to Facebook to announce the magazine, the community breathed life into the concept,” Giller said. “Their enthusiasm and ideas made Imperial Valley Alive! this community’s magazine. We are grateful to the thousands of comments, photos and suggestions we received,” she noted.

Reliance was established in 1997 by Bill Gay and his wife, Sue who coordinated advertising sales. The company expanded in January when Giller, former co-owner of Valley Solutions Group, Inc., and Dale, a former co-editor of the Imperial Valley Press joined the firm as partners.

Bill Gay and Giller both hold an Accreditation in Public Relations.  Bill Gay is a Fellow with the Public Relations Society of America.

All have been very active in the community.

Gay is a past president of the Brawley Chamber of Commerce and the El Centro Kiwanis Club. He also has served on various local boards and commissions, and is currently a member of the San Diego/Imperial Counties PRSA board of directors.

Giller is past President of the Brawley Chamber and is currently on its Executive Committee and also is a member of the COLAB Board as well as the El Centro Rotary Club and PRSA

Dale is a member of the Imperial Valley College Foundation Board, PRSA and the Imperial Rotary Club.
