CALIPATRIA — Officials at a state prison in Southern California are investigating the death of an inmate who they say died after fighting with two other prisoners.
The state corrections department said Monday that 30-year-old Kimsan Moun died Thursday at Calipatria State Prison in Imperial County.
Moun was serving a life sentence for an Orange County murder.
Officials say three inmates began fighting in a maximum-security exercise yard.
Guards used pepper spray and foam-tipped rubber projectiles to stop the fight. However, department spokeswoman Terry Thornton says Moun’s death does not appear to be from those efforts.
Moun was taken to an outside hospital where he was pronounced dead about two hours after the fight began.
The prison houses about 3,800 inmates.
