EL CENTRO – On Tuesday December 3rd, 2013, around 6:00 p.m., officers from the El Centro Police Department conducted a traffic stop in the area of Second and Orange Avenue on a 58 year old resident of El Centro.
A search was conducted on the driver’s vehicle which revealed a concealed firearm and drug paraphernalia.
The driver was arrested without incident for possession of a weapon in a vehicle and possession of drug paraphernalia.
Officers transported the man to his El Centro residence where a probation compliance check was conducted. After the compliance check was completed, officers transported the man to the El Centro Police Department to begin the booking process.
After the booking process was completed, officers observed the man having difficulty walking and chose to transport him to the El Centro Regional Medical Center for medical treatment prior to booking at the Imperial County Jail.
Upon arriving at the hospital the man, who was now unresponsive, was immediately taken in to the emergency room and medical aid was rendered.
The man was later pronounced dead by medical staff at the El Centro Regional Medical Center. El Centro Police Detectives are handling an investigation into the incident and are working with the Imperial County Coroner’s Office.
“The cause of death will be determined by the medical examiner via the Imperial County Sheriff’s Coroners Office”, said Commander Aaron Reel.
