EL CENTRO — As part of Women’s History Month, the women leaders of the Imperial Valley were honored by Assemblyman Eduardo Garcia at a special awards reception on Wednesday evening at the Courtroom Bourbons and Grill.
“We wanted to recognize a selected group of women that were nominated by their own community for their dedication and commitment to public service,” said Assemblyman Garcia, the host of the event. “They went above and beyond their professional roles that they have in this community.”
The following women were nominated by the local Chambers of Commerce and business organizations to be recognized at Wednesday’s event:
Patricia Ureña (56th Assembly District Woman of the Year)
Yulil Alonzo Garza- Mother’s & Men Against Gangs Coalition
Lupe Quintero – California Rural Legal Assistance
Soledad G. Salazar – Community Leader
Mercy Valenzuela – PIONEERS Memorial Healthcare District
Araceli Nelson – PIONEERS Memorial Healthcare District
Darletta Willis – El Centro Chamber of Commerce
Cherisse Alford – Alfords Distributing
Each woman was called to the stage and presented with roses and a plaque with their service. The award winners expressed gratitude to the committee for their support and nomination. They also thanked their family and friends who attended the event.
“We had a diverse group of people, coming from the business community, from the healthcare community, civic participants and an educators that represent youth and opportunities for the future here,” explained Garcia. “We wanted to recognize their work and I think it was accomplished, but more than anything is to let the community of Imperial Valley know how lucky they are to have such a dedicated group of individuals serving their community.”
“The outcome was great, you see the attendance and you see the smiles on people’s faces and you hear the moving stories. I think it was a great day here in El Centro,” commented Garcia.
