IMPERIAL VALLEY — This 2017 high school Varsity Basketball CIF Southern Section Tournament was inundated with Imperial Valley talent as eight local high schools advanced to the playoffs. Here’s how the teams fared.
Imperial Lady Tigers — With 27 wins and only two losses in the regular season, the girls finished (6-0) in first place atop the Desert League standings. Imperial headed into the Division I CIF tournament as the fourth seed and bounced thirteenth-seeded Bona Vista 73-51 in the first round. A 42-31 loss to (5) San Marcos in the quarter final ended the run for the Lady Tigers.
Calexico Lady Bulldogs — The Imperial Valley League Champions went undefeated in conference play and finished off with a 23-4 over-all record. Third seeded Calexico matched up with (14) Montgomery in the first round and won a close one 58-53 but fell to (6) Del Norte 45-36 in the quarter finals.
Calipatria Hornets — An overall record of (12-13) found this year’s squad entering the Division V CIF tournament ranked (4) with a first round bye. The Hornets beat (5) O’Farrell 54-40 in the quarter final. A close semifinal game resulted in a narrow 38-32 loss to eventual champions (1) Maranatha Christian.
Brawley Lady Wildcats — A fifteenth seed in the Division II CIF tournament, Brawley experienced an early exit as they took on (2) Scripps Ranch in a 62-20 losing effort.
Holtville Lady Vikings — The thirteenth ranked Division III CIF Southern Section representatives lost to Francis Parker, seeded at four, 59-31 in first round.
Palo Verde Yellow Jackets — Matching up with (8) Sage Creek, (9) Palo Verde was ousted 37-47 in the first round of the Division IV CIF playoff.
Central Spartans — A 13-15 regular season record was just enough to earn Central an invitation to the Division III CIF playoffs as a twelfth seed, but Otay Ranch (5) took out Central 68-45 in the first round.
Holtville Vikings — At 10-16, the Vikings came into the Division V CIF tournament seeded eleventh. A 75-31 upset in the first round against (6) Bayfront advanced Holtville to the second round where the back-to- back spoiler campaign was nearly manifested, but a feisty (3) High Teck San Diego team clipped the Vikings 60-56.
Calexico Bulldogs — The ‘Dogs took second place in IVL and enjoyed a 66-52 CIF Division IV first round win as (6) seed over (11) El Capitan. Hilltop put the lid on Calexico’s season in the quarter final as they beat the Bulldogs 58-52.
Palo Verde Yellow Jackets — A (5) positioning in the first round of the CIF Division IV tournament led to a 55-43 victory over (12) O’Farrell. The Yellow Jacket tourney journey was short-lived as they lost to Southwest 67-45 in the quarter final.
Southwest Eagles — With a 19-13 regular season record the CIF Division IV, (4) seeded Eagles hosted a first round playoff game where they smashed Calipatria 60-42, rolled Palo Verde 67-45, and lost a one possession 61-58 barn burner at Brawley in the semifinal.
Brawley Wildcats — This group of young men finished off the regular season with a 26-7 overall record, a first place undefeated (6-0) mark in Imperial Valley League play, a (1) seed in the CIF Division IV playoff, and a once in a lifetime playoff odyssey that resulted in three post season victories and a championship appearance where they surpassed Olympian 69-53 for the 2017 CIF San Diego Southern Section Division 4 championship crown.
