2014 10th Anniversary IV Junior Golf Tournament

BRAWLEY – Celebrating its 10th year, Imperial Valley Junior Golf Tournament was full of fun and games on the course Friday, June 6 at Del Rio Country Club and loads of prizes were given away. A long drive contest began the day as competitors teed off on the first hole to see who could hit their ball the furthest.

30 youth golfers from the Imperial and Yuma valleys competed for medals in the yearly event.  Playing in the 16-18 year old boys division, defending champion Matt Schmitt, 16 years old of Brawley, again took top honors and won the privilege of getting his name engraved for the second time on the perpetual Jr. Champion plaque shooting his lowest score ever, 67 for his 18 hole round.  El Centro’s, Tate Preece, 7 years old, won the 11 & under champion trophy and plaque playing in his first every IVJG event.

Boys and girls, 14 and over teed it up at 7:30 am followed by the 9 holers in the 13 and under divisions.

Liz and Gary Mamer, tournament coordinators, are stepping down after 10 years at the helm.

“You couldn’t have asked for a better behaved and fun group of kids and parents,” said Mamer, “not to mention these kids are good! We were very pleased with the turnout of boys and girls who came out to play, some in their first tournament ever. It’s been nice seeing some of these kids grow up on the course.  A few of our older players have been playing this tournament for a long time, Matt Schmitt since he was 7. He is now 16 years old and the Jr. Champion.  Golf raises good kids.”

Eveleine Currier and Shaeley Berker will take over as tournament coordinators next year.

“It’s time for us to move on,” said Mamer. “We feel very satisfied knowing the IVJG tournament will be in the hands of the Berkers and Curriers.  They will do a fantastic job.  We won’t be too far away though.”
