BRAWLEY – This Saturday, February 23, 2013, the Frankie L. Chavez Memorial Scholarship committee will hold their 19th annual barbeque at Hinojosa Park in Brawley from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
The Memorial Foundation raises money to provide college scholarships to Brawley Union High and Calipatria high school seniors. The Foundation considers their goals unique as they target average students in hopes that the scholarship recipients will become active participants and productive members of our local communities.
Last year, the foundation awarded $12,000 in scholarships to 22 seniors and they have awarded more than $164,000 in the past 18 years.
The annual barbeque is more than just food; the committee has planned a fun-filled day featuring live entertainment, a pit barbeque, and their annual softball tournament.
The foundation is grateful for their sponsors who include Gold Sponsors: George & Rose Carlson, Rubin Seeds LLC, and Rockwood Chemical, the Silver Sponsors: Judge Donal B. Donnelly, and Alford Distributing Co. The Bronze Sponsors were Hart Insurance Inc. Coni S. Stokely Insurance Services. Inc., Griggs Freight Lines, and K-F Seeds.
